Krishna - Movie Review

What's it about
After completing M.SC (computers), Krishna (Ravi Teja) wanders around Vijaywada city without any job and falls in love with Sandhya (Trisha) at first sight. Sandhya avoids Krishna initially but soon develops soft corner towards him. She is sister of a builder in Hyderabad (Shayaji Shinde) but she lives with her cousin Bobby (Brahmanandam) in Vijayawada. Now the drama shifts to Hyderabad. Krishna comes to Hyderabad when Sandhya shifts there. A rowdy called Jatka (Mukul Dev) vows that he would marry Sandhya only. The rest of the film is how Krishna takes on Jatka.
Analysis
What do you expect from a Ravi Teja film? Entertainment, right! From the word go, Krishna offers it aplenty. Full of comedy, less of action, Krishna is a complete paisa vasool entertainer. It is a surprise to see that director Vinayak taking a complete turn around. He effortlessly switches to comic entertainers from masala action movies. Ravi Teja and Brahmanandam bring the house down with their perfect comic timing. The first half is joyful ride - you can't stop laughing through out. The best part is that Vinayak has packaged the film so perfectly till the end with right mix of entertainment, glamour and action.
Krishna has more of Sreenu Vaitla touch in this Vinayak film. Vinayak gaaru, we welcome this change! No doubt, it is a formula film but the screenplay and the narrative structure is too good and doesn't shift your focus. Dialogues are hilarious. Comedy is created even in the villains gang.
Chase sequences and Vinayak's trademark scenes of blasting vehicles feature here too (only twice) but it is the entertainment that dominates and doesn't make you bore anywhere.
Aided by good technical values and high production values, the film is a perfect film for an outing during the Sankranthi time.
Some aspects that should be mentioned: 1) Comedy between Ravi Teja and Brahmanandam 2) Ravi Teja taking away Trisha from villain and the following chase sequence 3) Screenplay and dialogues 4) Cinematography
On the down side, it slows down towards the climax and lacks no novelty in storyline. The last song comes as hindrance to the flow of the story.
Performances
No other hero can do such comedy except Ravi Teja. He is perfect to such kind of roles. With each film, he is improving, especially in comic timing. It is his show all the way. Trisha is so beautiful and this is the first time that she played glamorous
character in Telugu. Ravi Teja and Trisha's pairing is also perfect and they have good chemistry. Brahmanandam takes the onus. Without him, the film is nothing. The veteran comedian is like a wine that tastes better with each day. After Dhee, Chandramohan gets another comic role. Newcomer Mukul Dev is good. Shinde, Kota, Sunil, JP and others have done adequate job.
Technical and production values should be mentioned. Chota K Naidu's camera brings richness to the screen. Perhaps, Vijayawada has never been so beautifully captured. After delivering dud like Yogi, V V Vinayak comes with refreshingly. He has reinvented his style and delivers goods again. After Lakshmi and Tulasi, writer Akula Shiva comes up with another winner. He gets full appreciation as director this time. He has extracted good performances from actors and technicians and blended it perfectly. Songs by music Chakri is adequate.
Bottom-line!
Krishna offers paisa vasool entertainment. If you are looking for good times pass this pongal, this can be the right choice. Comedy is its strength. Don't look for novelty in the story; Krishna takes you on comic ride.

Mr.Medhavi - Movie Review

Film: Mr.MedhaviCast: Raja, Genelia, Suman, Sonu Sood, Dharmavarapu, M S Narayana, TanikellaMusic: ChakriCinematography: Sunil K ReddyProduced by: Bodduluri Rama RaoStory, screenplay, dialogues and directed by: NeelakanthaRelease Date: Jan 26, 2008CBFC Rating: U

Analysis
Director Neelakantha this time chooses 'narrative' structure to tell the story. The film starts off interestingly with lead characters narrating the movie. He presents a simple love story in a different manner. The first half is too good laced with humour. But the second half drags on for no end and at times tests the patience. The film appeals to elite audiences as it lacks commercial elements. Raja and Genelia look good as pair and the scenes between them are well-shot. The first half can be enjoyed by everyone - especially the scenes between Dharmavarapu and M S Narayana are enjoyable. Post the interval, Raja meeting Sonu Sood and connecting scenes are tedious.
The intention of making hero realize his fault by putting against him an ideal person is good but it misfires with the wrong casting (Sonu Sood) and somewhere along the line the director has missed the grip.
Performances
Neelakantha extracts good performance from hero Raja. He looks handsome too.His character is an extention of Venu's Sada Mee Sevalto but here Raja looks endearing. Genelia looks chirpy as always. Sonu Sood is a miscast for the role. M S Narayana and Dharmavarapu provide enough comedy. Suman and Tanikella are okay.
Technically, it is Sunil Reddy's cinematography that catches the attention. He has done excellent job. Chakri's music is good although all the tunes are repetitive. As a director and writer Neelakantha succeeds but he should have been more careful in the second half.
Bottom-line
Neelakantha presents a simple love story with an interesting narration that appeals to limited section of audiences. After a very good first half, the film drags on and misses the track until the 'twist' in the climax. The film can be liked by elite audiences.Rating: 3/5

Vishaka Express - Review

Film: Vishaka ExpressCast: Rajiv Kanakala, Naresh, Preeti Jhangyani, Sindu Tolani, Kota Srinvasa Rao, Ali and others. Screenplay: Chandrasekhar Yeleti Dialogues: Harsha VardhanScript Co-coordinator: Vakkantham VamsiCinematography: P K H DasMusic: Vijay KurakulaProduced by: Tulasi GopalPresented by: S S RajamouliDirected by: Mullapudi VaraRelease Date: February 8, 2008Two strangers meet on a train and open up their hearts during the journey. One guy offers other exchange of murders. How is the idea? Interesting plot! Well, director Mullapudi Vara has taken basic plot from Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers On A Train (1951) for his Vishaka Express but he fails miserably in executing it well. Idea is good but the execution should have been better. He fails holding the audiences' interest till the climax as it is so long drawn. Lack of proper modus operandi is another flaw.
Two strangers Dr. Raja (Rajiv Kanakala) meet Ravi Varma (Allari Naresh) on a train. Raja is frustrated with his drunkard father (Kota Srinivasa Rao) and tells his problems to Ravi. Few days later, his father injures in an accident and brought to Raja's hospital. Later he dies of poisoning and the blame is put on the doctor. In fact, it is Ravi Varma who designs the death. He insists Raja to kill his wife in exchange of murdering his father. And the game is set for twist in the climax.
Rajiv Kanakala, a proven actor with varied roles, does good job but it is Allari Naresh who gets the maximum mileage from the show. He is at his best in the role of a jealous husband and psychopath. Preeti Jhangyani is okay. Sindu Tolani has no big role but she brings glamour by indulging in blink and miss kiss scene. The actors have done adequate job.
The film has flawed screenplay and has not handled with skill. The same goes for a

track. One wonders what contribution Chandrasekhar Yeleti and Rajamouli provided to this film.
Bottom-lineNo one would love to board on this train. The journey is boring.

Ontari - Movie Review

Film: OntariCast: Gopichand, Bhavana, Sunil, Ashishi Vidyardhi, Ajay, Supreet, Parachuri Venkateshwara Rao, Naresh and othersStory: Eetaram Films UnitDialogues: Maradhuri Raja and Bhasha SriMusic: ManisharmaCinematography: Sarvesh MurariEditing: Gowtham RajuAction: VijayPresented by: Pokuri RamaraoBanner: Eetaram FilmsProduced by: Pokuri BaburaoScreenplay and directed by: B V RamanaRelease Date: February 14, 2008
What's it about!
Vamsi (Gopichand) has close-knit family. He falls in love with Bujji (Bhavana) at first sight. He plays a small trick that makes her to believe him as CBI officer and he finally makes her fall in his love. On other hand, a local rowdy Lal's (Ashishi Vidyaradhi) brother (Ajay) eyes on Bujji and tries to touch her body. Vamsi bashes him up. The insulted villain sketches a master plan that is fatal to Vamsi’s life. The rest of film is revenge drama.
AnalysisGopichand has earned action hero image with successive hits. Ontari too deals the subject - revenge drama - that has scope for him to excel in that department. Mixing revenge formulae with element of schizophrenic disease is laudable effort. Although the plot is novel, it has not much room for entertainment and the narration is too dry to lift the spirits. A littler care on the narration and entertainment could have made the difference.
Gopichand's performance, interval twist, excellent musical score by Manisharma and new heroine Bhavana are positive aspects, while slow-paced narration, the offbeat climax, weak technical skills and lack of entertainment are major hindrances.
Performances
Gopichand has shown two shades of his character perfectly. He does best in the revenge episodes. Newcomer Bhavana has cute face and has good

. Savita Reddy's voice helped her further. The lead pair's chemistry too is good. Rajeev Kanakala is a miscast because such characters make impact when cast with new faces. Ashishi Vidyardhi, Ajay and Supreet have done their job good.
There seems to be some technical glitches as the film has inconsistent lighting, many scenes are shot in out focus (Or is it the case of bad way of doing D.I?). Manisharma gives riveting music for the film and they also are picuterised neatly. Two songs - Cheppalani Undi.. and Deeni Jimmada are catchy. Director B V Ramana should have gone for faster narration but his screenplay technique is interesting.Bottom-line
Ontari has novel plotline for a revenge drama but the narration should have been better. Gopichand, music, heroine are its positive aspects. Lack of entertainment, technical glitches and slow paced narration are spoilers. On the whole, a very average flick. Rating: 3/5

Idhee Sangati - Movie Review

Film: Idee SangatiCast: Tabu, Abbas, Raja (in a guest role), Kota, Melkote, Hema, Sunil, Surya, M S Narayana, Brahmaji, Apoorva, Chalapathi RaoStory: K N Y PatanjaliMusic: John P VarkyCinematography: JK GummadiBanner: FilmotsavScreenplay, produced and directed by: Chandra SiddardhRelease Date: Feb 22nd, 20008CBFC Rating: A
Director Chandra Siddardh has acquired good name with niche films like Aa Naluguru, and Appudappudu. And this time, for Idhee Sangati, he adopts a novel (Mera Bharat Mahan) written by K N Y Patanjali on to the screen. The film looks at the political, media, judiciary and police system in satirical way and exposes the greedy nature of people. But adapting literary novels on to the screen is a tough task and requires great skills to hold the audience's interest.
Chandra Siddardh scores in presenting the film in style with able help from cameraman and music director but his screenplay in the second half peters into predictable. Post-interval there is no drive in the plot. Such films should be told in more comic way (like Priyadarshan's slapstick comedies) and here Chandra Siddardh fails in big way
The story is about Murthy (Abbas) and his wife Swarajyam (Tabu) and their greediness. Murthy is a corrupted reporter who handles the beat of ‘crime’. One day, a train accident happens in the city and Murthy and his photographer (Sunil) reach to the cover the story. Instead of doing their job, they loot the gold ornaments and the other belongings of the dead passengers in the accident. They reach home with a bag of ornaments and a suitcase.
Later it comes to the light that a suitcase consisting of precious diamonds worth Rs 500 Crores is missing from one passenger. And the diamonds belong to Prime Minister of India who hails from Andhra Pradesh. The police are now on the hunt for the diamonds. Meanwhile, Swarajyam sees the diamonds in the suitcase and keeps secretly in bathroom without informing her hubby. The rest of the film is how police, thieves, lawyers, and politicians indulge in heinous acts to grab the diamonds to their own.
Multiple award-winning actress Tabu as middleclass woman who yearns for a better living does give performance. Yet, there is certain unease and artificiality in her portrayal. Her character doesn’t evoke sympathy and excessive glamour show brings 'negative' quality to the role. Although Abbas gives convincing performance, it is hard to understand that reporter looting ornaments on a dead body. Kota Srinivas Rao as Prime Minister, Sunil as photographer, Surya as greedy police officer and Brahmaji in the role of a lawyer have done justice to their characters. Raja makes guest appearance and his character is underdeveloped. Former Prime Minister PV Narasinha Rao and Chandra Swamy episode is also dealt in this film.
Lilting music by newcomer George P Varki and Gummadi Jayakrishna's camerawork are praiseworthy. The pictursiation of two songs - one shot on Raja and the other on Tabu and Abbas - are eye-catching and imaginatively shot. The plot line has potential to become an interesting expose but it is not handled well in the second half. The problem lies with its artificiality in the behavior of characters. No one can empathies or sympathies with them! And the pace of the film is too slow.

Gamyam - Movie Review

Film: GamyamCast: Sharwanand, 'Allari' Naresh, Kamlinee Mukherjee, Vijay Chander, and othersDialogues: Nagaraju GandhamMusic: E S Murthy - AnilLyrics: Seetharamama Shasthry, E S MurthyCinematography: Hari AnumoluFights: Ram LakshmanEditing: Shravan KProduced by: Saibabu JagarlamudiBanner: First Frame EntertainmentDirected by: Radhakrishna (Krish)Release Date: Feb 29, 2008
What's it about
Abhiram (Sharwanand) is a rich brat. He sees the society through windows of his car and never had glimpse of life beyond his surroundings. He falls in love with a doctor Janaki (Kamlinee) who is idealistic and serves for the society. He proposes to her and comes out to the streets and roams around the gullies to get her love. She likes him but is not sure of how he honest he is about love and his responsibility towards society. On his birthday party, the differences between them come out in the open and Janaki leaves the town. In search of his lover, Abhiram takes a journey on his motorcycle. During the course of journey, he meets a petty thief Gaali Sreenu (Allari Naresh). They bond together. Rest of the film is how Abhiram’s life changes during this journey.
Analysis
Gamyam is good cinema. A new director Radhakrishna comes up with an entertaining and thought provoking film. This is perfect example of a director 'inspiring' by a World Cinema classic and telling the story completely different and unique style. No, it is not copy of The Motorcycle Dairies but definitely, the director is inspired by it (a genuine case of inspiration, not copying).
A spoiled rich brat realizes the social responsibility by taking an unusual journey. A petty thief realizes the meaning of life after an accidental meeting with this guy on the road. And there is love story to the basis for them. The director's intricately crafted script laced with comedy and rawness makes the film a treat to watch. Superb dialogues and sensible handling (in spite of naivety in some scenes) have helped the film.
The writing is multi-layered. Despite the serious theme, the director and its scriptwriter have never left an opportunity to include comic situations and add commercial elements such as show by recording dance troupe. A debutant director handling such subject is commendable feature. He proves that offbeat themes can be told entertainingly.
On the flipside, the film goes a little off-track in the second half. It draws on in certain portions. And its music is not that appealing. In fact, these kinds of films can be done away with songs.
PerformancesThe biggest strength of the film is Allari Naresh. Allari Naresh’s character resembles to that of Surya's in Shivaputurdu and dominates the show with his comedy and energy . Sharwanand too looks better in the role of a rich brat. Kamlinee as always is a bankable actress. She has lesser character but gives what is required of. Brahmanadam in small role provides laughter. The guy who played Naxalite character shines too.
On the technical side, dialogues by newcomer Nagaraju are first rate. Senior cameraman Hari Anumolu’s camerawork is okay. Sample of the dialogues which are so good.

Bottom-line!
Gamyam is good cinema with touch of artistic values. The film's strength are writing and direction. New director Radhakrishna shows that offbeat movies can be made entertainingly. He deserves praise for his honest effort and superb writing. Despite some flaws (like slow pace in the second half, not so lilting music) and irrespective of its commercial viability, the film is a treat to watch. Rating: 3.5/5
